An extremely fine pair of breakfront cabinets, by Gillows of Lancaster.
Mahogany, red cedar, satinwood, parcel gilt and painted. The mirrored superstructure with pierced gallery above a cross banded and strung top, the frieze with rectangular tablet painted with green foliage, the base with two cupboard doors painted with scrolling leaves, flowers and urns between leaf carved and fluted pilasters, flanked by two glazed doors enclosing shelves, on platform base.Stamped on the top edge of the doors, Gillows & Co. 9348.
Both the stamp and the number are consistent with the production date c.1880. The backs of the carcases are stamped J. Davison
